Goals
- Analyze the rhetorical situation and determine the appropriate audience or users of written communication, considering the needs of global audiences and people with disabilities. [CLO 1]
- Use conventions of various workplace genres, such as proposals, instructions, correspondence, reports, and slide decks, with understanding of how the genre conventions can be used as heuristics and as principles of arrangement. [CLO 4]
- Apply principles of effective visual design for print and electronic presentation, including hierarchical, chronological, and spatial arrangements. [CLO 6]
- Identify and apply the principles of effective style in the composing of usable, reader-centered written communications. [CLO 7]
The Task
What I Want You to Do
Attend an online meeting or event related to your field and then write a trip report that documents the event. [note: because of COVID-19, please stick with online meetings and events only for this activity.]
Why I Want You to Do It
Trip reports document what happened during a trip. Some companies use the reports to show how the goals for the trip were met. Others use the reports to share what happened with the rest of the organization. This is a standard writing task that will help prepare you for the workplace.
How You Do It
- Choose an online event that will expand your knowledge of your career field. You can attend any of the following for this activity:
- Any colloquium, presentation, or special event offered by the Department or College of your major
- Business meetings and/or special events sponsored by professional fraternities, honor societies, or special groups related to your major
- Any event offered by Virginia Tech’s Career and Professional Development Center
- Any professional conference/convention attendance related to your major or career
If you want to attend an event that is not covered by the list, you can write me to ask if it will count. In your email, be sure to explain how the event is a professional activities that relate to your major and/or career plans.
- Familiarize yourself with the characteristics and features of trip reports. The following readings offer advice on writing trip reports:
- Go to the event or on the trip, and gather information for your report. Take notes on what happens and gather or download any materials that you can use as you write your report. You can take photos or screenshots as well.
- Write a one-page Trip Report in your word processor, using memo format. Keep the following requirements in mind:
