Course Objectives for Technical Writing
You are in the right place if you are. . .
- a developer or inventor who wants to describe a new, cool thing or idea to the world.
- an innovator who wants to convince others to invest time, money, or other resources in your projects.
- an engineer or scientist who wants to recommend ways to solve problems.
- a boffin who wants to explain to others how to do something.
- a Hokie who wants to show the world how you use your skills for good (and how they can help).
In this course, you will learn how to
- write about science, technology, and engineering innovations, products, and services in ways that others will understand.
- analyze your audience and purpose so that you can choose the best way to present information clearly and effectively.
- determine ways to present information to a wide audience, including international readers and people with disabilities.
- find and evaluate original, ethical evidence that supports your position.
- work collaboratively and individually to compose and publish texts in digital environments.
- write documents you may encounter in the workplace, such as letters, memos, proposals, reports, and presentations.
- use colors, layout, and formatting that make your documents understandable and easy to read.
- take advantage of design principles, including contrast, repetition, alignment, and proximity, to communicate your ideas effectively.
Prerequisite: English 1106, English 1204H, COMM 1016, or equivalency, and Junior standing.
